Solanum or Thoothuvalai (தூதுவளை) Chutney

Thoothuvalai is a very common herb used to treat the common cold, cough and asthma.

Its very difficult to give this as a kashayam or medicine to kids to prevent cold and cough. So I usually do it as a chutney and include it in my regular menu so that this wonderful herb goes in in an invisible format. :)

Ingredients :  (serves 5)  
Thoothuvalai leaves : 1 cup
Urad Dal - 1 tbsp
green chillies : 3 nos
Coconut scrapped : 1.5 Cup
Salt to taste
Tamarind - a pinch
Oil as  required

In a kadai, heat oil and fry the urad dal till it turns light brown. Take it aside in a bowl. Now add the green chillies and the thoothuvalai leaves and fry till the leaves shrink. Allow it to cool.
 
Grind the cooled ingredients with a coconut,salt and tamarind to a coarse chutney. Goes well along with idli and dosa.
