Uppu Urundai is a traditional evening snack we do at home. This is a small variation of the same -with a more healthy ingredient for kids.
Ingredients :
rice - 1 cup
channa dal - 1/4 cup
thoor dal - 2 tbsp.
moong dal - 2 tbsp
red chillies - 7 numbers
black pepper corns - 1 tsp
coconut scrapping - 1/4 cup
salt to taste
Soak rice, channa dal, thoor dal, moong dal, red chillies and pepper corns in water a 1 hr. Grind it in a mixer with little water coarsely. (It should not be very fine. you will not get a good texture.) How heat oil in a saucepan and add mustard seeds, gram dal and curry leaves. Allow it to splutter. Then add a pinch of hing and pour the grinded mixture to it. Keep mixing the same until the mixture thickens. (you should be able to make it as balls. wait till that consistency). Once done, add little corriander leaves and the scrapped coconut to the mixture. Now rub some ghee in your hands and make small balls with the mixture.
Grease idli plates and place the balls in them. Steam them in the idli cooker for 5 mins. Serve hot. Can also be served with idli podi to add more flavour.
Note: If you do not have time to soak and grind the mix, you can take the rice and dals and fry them crisply in a hot dry pan separately. Allow them to cool for some time. Then dry grind the rice and dals. Heat water in a pan. Add little oil to the water and once water boils, add the ground flour little by little, so that it will not form lumps. (similar to upuma). Then season it and follow the same process as above.
